Surfing in Surfer's Paradise

There is a small beach town in the Gold Coast, which is about an hour south of Brisbane, called Surfer's Paradise. And as you could imagine, it is a place for good surfers, and for those who which they were good surfers. I fall in to the second category, unfortunately. Sarah and I had gone one day and taken a lesson, and then went back a few days later and just rented surfboards for a few hours. Living in San Diego, we had gone surfing quite a few times, but since it had been over a year since we had done that, we figured we needed a refresher course. I still wish I was a lot better, I think I need some one on one lessons. Any takers? We had fun though. Earlier in the day we had stopped in a cute little area of town called Paddington, to eat at Sassafrass. Precious cafe, not the best food, and absolutely poor service. Then we found an organic grocery store and Sarah loved the peanut butter maker. The next time we went surfing, it happened to be the start of "schoolies", which is a funny story. Schoolies is like Spring Break on steroids, and Surfer's Paradise happens to be the capital of all schoolies festivities. So, basically, high school kids in grade 12 (seniors), who have just graduated, all attend schoolies as a way to celebrate. They stay in all the hotels in the area, and take over the town for the week or so. Believe me, if we had known what to expect before we got there, we would not have showed up, it was a bit wild. All this to say, it was still a fun time.
